In conjunction to the Leadership Institute Conference held in Altoona this weekend, I was afforded the opportunity to enjoy coffee and conversation with Senator Chuck Grassley on a variety of policy topics. Warning him in advance that I publish Hawkeyereview.com and he would be "on the record," I asked our good Senator if he was considering a run for Governor as rumors had intimated as of late...
"No I am not going to run for Governor and that's on the record," said Senator Grassley. "I have a lot of important work ahead of me on behalf of the good Iowa people and that's where I'm already raising money and getting ready to run again."
I also asked Grassley if he had experienced anything quite like the current situation in D.C. during his lengthy career in public service. "Well, this reminds me of the crisis in '82 when we had high interest rates and high unemployment and possibly again a few years later during the farm crisis."
I found it somewhat amusing when I asked the Senator about his frequent trips to the banner position of the Drudge Report in the last few weeks and he was seemingly "unaware" of his celebrity status. I had to explain his "3" recent splashes onto the blogs and news cycles including the "honor & suicide, sucking off the tit of the taxpayer," and of course his recent comment to Senator Kent Conrad where he quipped, "your wife said the same thing" after Conrad said, "Oh you are good."
Seeing first hand just how surprised and bemused Grassley was, it truly occurred to me just how little attention he pays to himself and how much of his work is focused on behalf of us Iowans.
Senator Grassley....you are good!
